I was at school here from '73 to '79 and in the same year and classes as Tim Hussey and Marc Liron who have posted below. I too recall the occasion when we had to sit in the hall and watch Pebble Mill - not my favourite show, but better than lessons!

I would like to come for a visit and see the old place one day!

Joe

Note from Administrator : You may not recognise much of the school now but please contact our headteacher if you'd like to visit us.

I attended Staplehurst school from 1969 to 1975 and I was very happy there. I'm struggling a bit to remember my teachers' names - Miss Spurgeon, Mr Forsyth and Mr Clarke all spring to mind! I found this site while Googling for Mr Yates-Smith's italic handwriting book - I am currently studing an Open University course in linguistics and handwriting, and the resurgence of italic handwriting in the 1950s has just been mentioned. It brings back memories ....

I particularly remember the freezing outside swimming pools, the outside toilets, the humps on the field, and being Mary in the nativity play.

Note from the site administrator. Joanne, come back and visit the school when you are next in the area. Relive some old memories and see how much has changed too!

Hi everyone at Staplehurst School.

I used to go here and left September 2008. I miss everyone, including all the great teachers and the friends I made who I will never forget. I have had some fab times at this school and will cherish all of the memories that I made there.

Invicta Grammar School is great and as well as keeping in contact with my old friends I have made lots of new ones.

Thank you very much to Mrs Handley, Mrs Hastings and Mrs Hynes for a fab leaving play last year. I will miss you and hope you are doing well. Also to all of my teachers that have taught me through the school since reception I am very happy to have known.

Good luck to all the students that are attending Staplehurst School and I hope you do well in the 11+ and get to a good school like I am at.

Also good luck to all the new teachers that are starting, they will have a great time throughout the year!

I will never forget you Staplehurst school. You were the best ever primary school.

This is for Elizabeth Chennery - yes, I remember Mr. Pastry opening the swimming pool. I have fond memories of the school - I attended between 65-68 and moved from the old school to the new school. My first teacher was Miss MacRoberts and then Mrs. Yates-Smith. I remember Mr. Herbert and Mr. Dobell as well. Aah! Happy Days!

I used to go to Staplehurst school and left about 6 years ago. Looking at the schools photographs reminded me of all the good times that I had there as it was such a great school. The teacher I remember most is Mr.Herbert. He never really taught me but I remember sitting in the hall singing with all the people playing the recorder at the front. Some great people at that school left me with some wonderful memories which I will treasure always. Another thing I remember from school was having the swimming lessons outside in the freezing cold in the old swimming pool. When we had the heated pool (still outisde) built it was boiling hot and we couldn't stand the heat after about 5 minutes! Also the clubs they used to do in the holidays where you could go along and have a splash about in the heated pool when it was nice... great school xx

I left Staplehurst school around about 1983. My teachers were, as far as I can remember; Lower Juniors; Mrs Brown & Mr Clarke, Upper Juniors; Mr Herbert for both years. Mr Spear was Headmaster then. They were all great teachers. I still use italic handwriting today and have tried teach my own children! I remember the sheds in the infants playgound where the pet rabbits were kept, the hump on the field, swimming lessons in the cold, cold mornings and sports day was always a great event. I remember that we had a brilliant netball team too! And not forgetting Gypsy Tart!!

I was there from 1974-1979 under the guidance of Mr and Mrs Yates-Smith (at the same time a Marc Liron who's also left a message - hello Marc!)

My memories are many. Footie with Mr Parton and Mr Herbert. The time that Mr Yates-Smith was on the TV show Pebble Mill (the forerunner of Richard and Judy) promoting italic handwriting and we all got to watch it in the hall. Taking the newspaper collections on a trolley over to the 'Old School' at lunch (recycling even back then!)

The grand opening of the adventure playground. The sad departure of the aviary that was in the new school playground. Chess club in the porta-cabin and in the winter, 'headers and volleys' with a tennis ball against the wall in the upper juniors.

It was a great school. Happy days.

Note from the website administrator : Fancy a trip down 'Memory Lane'? Call Mrs Bolt to arrange a visit.

I went to both the infant and junior schools from 1965 when Mr.Yates-Smith was headmaster. The only teacher I remember is Miss Lewis. I also remember that there was a picture of the Queen on her wedding day. I was an angel in one of the nativity plays and I think Joesph was played by Peter ????? Does anyone remember Mr.Pastry opening the swimming pool at the junior school? My surname then was Chenery. Any memories glady welcomed. I see the uniform is the same!!!!!!!

My parents returned to Staplehurst with my sister and I in tow for my final year before attending secondary school (Cornwallis) in 1977. It was a traumatic experience for a 10 year old but I have fond memories from that time. I now live in Australia but still have contact with friends made from those days and best of all ....I learnt to write in beautiful italics...

Note from the Web Administrator : Please visit your old school sometime, Theresa, and see how it has blended traditional values into a modern educational setting with great success.

I left the School in 1983 and had a great time there. It's nice to see the tradition of winning most sporting events looking good still. We used to win the netball tournament every year, we had a brilliant team! You should try and put some photos of us up on the gallery.

When I started the headmaster was Mr Yates-Smith and when I left it was Mr Spear. My teachers were (excuse spellings if wrong) Mrs Spurgeon, Mrs Bowman, Mrs Brown and Mrs Boyce. I loved them all.

Thank you.

Note from the Web Administrator : Thank you, Katherine, for sharing your happy memories with us. You'll be delighted to know that Mrs Brown still helps out on a 'supply' basis periodically.

I left this school in 1982. I had a great time there. Mr Spear was headmaster when I left, it was only his 1st or maybe 2nd year I think. Mr Herbert was my final teacher.

Thanks Toby for your message - Although the staff have changed since 1982, the children are still having a great time and enjoying an ever increasingly successful education!

Just taking a trip down "memory lane" I left Staplehurst Primary in 1979. Way back when Mr Yates-Smith was the headmaster... and Mrs Yates-Smith, Mr Parton and Miss Marfleet were my teachers...

I have so many happy memories of those times!

I was lucky enough to be invited to the "Grand Opening" of the new school hall on Friday. I just wanted to say I thought the children's performances were excellent and what a privilege it was to have Dame Kelly Holmes present to officially open the hall. It was a lovely event - a real piece of Staplehurst school history. I am sure it will be a memory cherished by many children for years to come !!
